Cathal’s Story: Putting People First in Safety

Safety Starts with People

For Electrical Commissioning Engineer Cathal, serving as a site Safety Representative isn’t just part of the job—it’s a personal commitment. Whether he’s leading toolbox talks or championing the LotusWorks “Good Catch” initiative, Cathal brings a steady, people-first approach that truly reflects our core value of Safety and his belief that everyone deserves to go home safe at the end of the day.

In the data centercommissioning industry where teams work around high-voltage systems and complex infrastructure, maintaining a strong safety culture is critical. Since August 2023, Cathal has been based on one of our client sites in Sweden, where he plays a central role in safety operations. He plays a key role in creating a proactive culture of awareness and accountability, ensuring that both our client and LotusWorks team expectations are met with diligence and care. From day-to-day compliance checks to longer-term safety engagement initiatives, Cathal’s influence extends across disciplines and departments.

Stepping Into Safety

He first stepped into the safety role by volunteering – something that came naturally to him. “I actually got involved in health and safety by volunteering,” he recalls. “At the time, there was an opportunity to support safety efforts on site, and I put my hand up because I’ve always felt a strong sense of responsibility when it comes to looking out for others.”

Since then, Cathal has become a trusted presence on site, one who leads by example. He facilitates toolbox talks, ensures permits are in place for all activities, and participates in weekly safety walks and monthly meetings. Each day begins with reviewing the latest safety updates and keeping documentation up to date so the wider team always has access to critical information. From checking permits to keeping up with daily site changes, Cathal approaches the role with a steady hand.

Building a Culture of Awareness

While meeting regulatory standards is a critical part of the job, Cathal believes that truly effective safety goes beyond compliance, it’s about creating an environment where people look out for one another.

One example of this proactive mindset is the “Good Catch Winner of the Month” initiative that Cathal introduced on-site. The programme celebrates team members who identify near misses, flag hazards early, or suggest improvements that enhance safety.

“It’s a simple way to get people talking and noticing what’s happening around them,” he says. “The goal is to keep safety visible—not just on posters or paperwork, but in our daily conversations.”

These efforts, he notes, have helped open up important dialogues between disciplines, especially in fast-paced environments where change is constant.

A Site That Stands Apart

While toolbox talks and procedures are shared regularly by the general contractor, Cathal plays a key role in making sure they’re delivered clearly and reinforced across the LotusWorks crew. It’s about more than just passing on information — it’s making sure everyone understands and applies it.

While many sites experience evolving safety behaviours over time, Cathal notes that he arrived with a strong standard already in place reflecting LotusWorks’ own safety-first mindset, which goes beyond compliance to create a culture of accountability and care. “This site has had a strong safety culture since day one. Everyone takes it seriously, and that consistency really makes a difference.” That baseline of shared responsibility, he adds, creates space for continual improvement. It also enables new team members to adapt quickly and feel supported as they integrate into the site’s safety expectations.

Recognition Through Action

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. This year alone, he’s received two safety vouchers on site and two more from LotusWorks. But the rewards, for him, go beyond acknowledgment. “For me, when we say that safety is a core value, it’s about more than just policies and procedures, it’s about protecting people,” he says. “I’ve got kids at home, so the goal is always to get home safely to them at the end of the day. That’s the mindset I bring to work every morning.”

That simple mindset shapes how Cathal approaches his work every day. By taking initiative, staying informed, and keeping lines of communication open, Cathal helps ensure that safety isn’t a box-ticking exercise, but a lived value across every shift.

LotusWorks: Where Safety Is a Shared Commitment

At LotusWorks, safety is more than a priority, is one of our core values that shapes how we work together every day. Cathal’s story reflects the difference one person can make when they lead with care, responsibility, and a people-first mindset.
