From Semiconductors to Data Centers: Conor’s Journey Across Industries

Unlocking New Opportunities Through Transferable Skills

In today’s dynamic job market, career mobility is more important than ever. Professionals are increasingly leveraging their skills across industries, exploring opportunities that align with their evolving interests and expertise. At LotusWorks, we recognize the immense value of transferable skills and actively support career transitions through cross-sector upskilling and professional development.

This piece highlights how internal mobility supports career growth and adaptability. Through Conor’s journey, we showcase the expertise our teams bring across various sectors. In Conor’s case, shifting from Semiconductor to Datacenter illustrates how a strong foundation of technical skills, combined with company support, enables a smooth transition between industries.

Conor - Data Center Commissioning Mechanical Lead at LotusWorks

As a Data Center Commissioning Mechanical Lead on a client site in Sweden, Conor completes the commissioning of mechanical systems within Data Center projects. His role includes operating according to design specifications and industry standards. “My role is pivotal in guaranteeing that these systems function safely, efficiently and reliably to support our client’s Datacenter projects” Conor shares.

Transition to Data Center Sector:

Conor previously worked in the Semiconductor sector before transitioning to the Data Center sector. His move was driven by the industry’s rapid expansion and technological advancements, along with the support from LotusWorks. The increasing global reliance on data storage and processing requirements, especially with the rise of cloud computing and artificial intelligence presented an exciting opportunity to further develop and grow his mechanical engineering skills in a dynamic and growing sector.

Making Career Transitions Seamless:

At LotusWorks, we supported Conor’s transition into a new sector by offering tailored training aligned with the specific requirements of Data Center Commissioning on a greenfield site. “LotusWorks’ commitment to professional development and their supportive environment has enabled me to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in my new role and ultimately deliver value back to the company” Conor notes.

Lessons Learned: Adapting to a New Industry:

For Conor, the most significant learning experience during this transition was adapting to the new build construction environment. During my time in Semiconductor manufacturing operations, we focused on key pillars such as Quality, Precision and Contamination Control. Whereas Data Center focuses more on Uptime, Energy Efficiency, and Cooling Capacity to handle vast amounts of data processing and to ensure operational costs and data processing security is mitigated and optimized” Conor shares.

Keeping up with the Evolving Data Center Landscape:

For Conor, the emerging trends in the Data Center sector make the transition and his role in general even more exciting. “There is a growing emphasis on developing energy-efficient architectures and integrating renewable energy sources to reduce the carbon footprint of Data Centers” says Conor.

The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning—rapidly being integrated into businesses and everyday life—is driving increased demand for high-performance computing capabilities within Datacenter. This, in turn, is accelerating the adoption of specialized chips and processors. As a result, Datacenters are facing growing requirements to support higher-density power and cooling demands.

Expanding Expertise:

Transitioning to the Data Center sector allowed Conor to further develop his large-scale project management skills and learn the commissioning processes involved in delivering an operational Data Center. His foundational skills in mechanical systems from the Semiconductor industry is proving invaluable in understanding the complex mechanical commissioning process and deliverables to ensure optimal performance and quality is delivered to client’s Data Center.

Conor’s Advice for Navigating Industry Transitions:

  • Leverage Transferable Skills: Look to identify and develop skills from your previous sector that are applicable to the new industry such as IT skills, project management, leadership skills and engineering fundamentals.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay up to speed and alert as much as you can on new industry standards, trends and advancements to remain competitive and effective in your role.
  • Look For Supportive Employers: Align with organizations like LotusWorks that invest in employee development and facilitates career transitions that allows you to positively grow and reach your personal career milestones.

“Embracing change and proactively acquiring new competencies can lead to fulfilling career advancements across diverse sectors. Along the way, you build valuable relationships, expand your expertise, and enhance your overall professional growth” Conor shares.
