Finisklin Charity Cup in support of Maryville Homeless Shelter

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”

Giving back has been and continues to be an integral part of the culture at LotusWorks and for all businesses small and large, there is always an element of giving back and a focus on giving back to local and national charities each year. Selecting a charity is never an easy task considering, there are multiple charities experiencing major cutbacks in recent times.

Homelessness is very topical in the national media recently. However, we found that few people working in the Finisklin Business Park, Sligo, understood the services that the local Maryville Homeless Shelter provides. Maryville is located in Finisklin and is run by Sligo Social Services. LotusWorks HQ, and many other successful businesses are located close to the Maryville homeless shelter, so LotusWorks staff chose it as their charity of the year and decided to help raise much needed funds for the shelter.

Faye & Finbarr from Maryville and Sligo Social Services came to the LotusWorks HQ and spoke to LotusWorks staff , detailing the cutbacks that Maryville has recently  experienced. Basic necessities, personal hygiene items and the facility itself has suffered as a result of the cutbacks. Maryville provides accommodation for 15 homeless people every night and provides food including a cooked lunch and access to shower and laundry facilities too.

In Q1 of 2018, 102 people were registered homeless in Sligo. With a better understanding of the vital services the Maryville shelter provides, the LotusWorks team met and discussed what could be done to help and how to get the local business community involved to help the funds that Maryville so badly needs. The team decided to run a charity soccer event – the “Finisklin Charity Cup” was born.

The team approached businesses based in Finisklin with the idea and were delighted with the positive response received. 10 businesses signed up for the evenings 7 a-side “Finisklin Charity Cup” soccer tournament.

A huge thanks and best of luck to tomorrow night’s participating teams, which includes:
Abbott, Amcor, HBS, Stiefel, Litec Moulding Limited, Voya, Ward Automation, ICU Medical and LotusWorks. Each company paid €250 to enter their team so €2,500 has been raised for Maryville before the event takes place.

The event would not be possible without the very generous sponsorships made. The main sponsors of the “Finisklin Charity Cup” are Diverse Printing, who looked after all signage for the event, Connolly’s Motor Group have kindly donated the cup, the first

Finisklin Cup winner will be announced by 9pm tomorrow evening at the Showgrounds in Sligo.

Total Produce donated fruit for the participating team’s refreshment and thanks to the Sligo Rovers showgrounds, the use of the facility is free of charge for the event and four referees have also volunteered their time. It’s been amazing to see what can be achieved by a small business community when all join together.

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!” – The statement fits perfectly when describing the Finisklin fundraiser event.

The “Finisklin Charity Cup” takes place on Wednesday, June 20th from 6pm-9pm in the Showgrounds Astro Facility. Please come along to cheer on your team and see who takes home the Connolly’s Finisklin Cup 2018.

LotusWorks wish to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has shown their support in getting behind this local initiative. For further information on the work of Maryville visit https://www.sligosocialservices.ie/homeless-services/
